Sharadchandra Shankar Shrikhande obtained PhD (1950) from the University of North Carolina, USA. He was Director, Mehta Research Institute, Allahabad; Professor of Mathematics and Director, Centre of Advanced Study in Mathematics, University of Bombay (1963-78); and Professor of Statistics, Banaras Hindu University (1960-63).
Academic & Research Achievements: Shrikhande has worked on combinatorial problems of design of experiments and related graph theory problems. His most significant contribution has been the disproof of a celebrated conjecture of Euler on the non-existence of mutually orthogonal Latin squares of order 4t+2 made in 1782.
Other Contributions: Shrikhande served as Member of the International Statistical Institute, Indian Statistical Institute, INSA Council (1969-71) and the Editorial boards of Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics and Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference.
Awards and Honours: Professor Shrikhande was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Maharashtra Academy of Sciences, and Institute of Mathematical Statistics (USA).
