Coluthur Gopalan obtained MD (1945) from the University of Madras; PhD (1949) and DSc from University of London, UK; FECP from University of Edinburgh and University of London, UK; and DSc (hc) from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. His area of specialization is nutrition. He was Director, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad (1960-74); and Director-General, Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi (1947-79).
Academic and Research Achievements: Gopalan\\\\\\\'s researches have brought to fore various aspects of nutrition including public health, agriculture and socio-economic aspects, especially with regard to underprivileged communities. Time and again he has sought to underscore the importance of nutrition as a major factor in national and human development.
Other Contributions: Gopalan built and nurtured the National Institute of Nutrition. As Director General of ICMR, he gave a new orientation to medical research, ensuring adequate emphasis on the problems of communicable diseases and those related to poverty and under-nutrition. He is President of Nutrition Foundation and Nutrition Society of India; President, IUNS (1975-79); Chairman, Regional Advisory Committee on Medical Research, WHO (1975-80); Member, Global Advisory Committee on Medical Research, WHO (1977-80); Member, Nutrition Expert Panel of WHO/FAO; Chairman, Task Force on Nutrition of NCST (1973) and several other national and international bodies. He served INSA as its Council Member (1969-71).
Awards and Honours: Gopalan is a Fellow of Royal Society of London; Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and National Academy of Medical Science (India). He was Honorary Member of American Institute of Nutrition. His other awards and honours include: Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize (1954), Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize (Senior) of ICMR (1960); Amrut Mody Research Award (1972); Dr BC Roy National Award (1974); Ambhuj Nath Bose Prize of Royal College of Physicians, London (1975); Ademola Prize of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1976); Dhanwantari Award (1978); FICCI Award (1978); WHO \\\\\\\'Health for All\\\\\\\' Medal (1988); International Union of Nutrition Sciences (IUNS) Award (1989); CV Raman Medal (1988) and RD Birla Award (1990). He has been conferred on several lectureships such as Lala Shriram Award and Lecture (1976); Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture (1979); Searle Endowment Lecture; Lady Brahmachari Lecture of University of Calcutta; Paula Memorial Lecture of University of Colombo; Subroto Mukherji Oration (1981); Col. Amir Chand Oration of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (1990); and Hanifa Lecture of Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh (1991).
