Mahinder Kumar Jain received his BA (Hons) and MA in Mathematics from the University of Delhi. He was awarded DPhil degree (1956) by the University of Calcutta. Subsequently, he was selected for a Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg Research Fellowship for advanced study at the Institute of Applied Mathematics, University of Hamburg, Germany (1957-60). On his return to India, he was awarded the DSc degree (1963) by IIT Kharagpur. In 1965, Jain joined as Head of the Department of Mathematics at the newly founded IIT at Delhi. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois, Urbana, Champaign USA (1969). In 1984, Jain was appointed Deputy Director of IIT. He was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the APS University, Rewa (MP) (1989). After retirement (1992), he joined the Department of Mathematics, University of Mauritius.
Academic and Research Achievements: At IIT Delhi, Jain initiated both teaching and research programmes in numerical analysis, a newly emerging area in mathematics and computer science. He initiated the studies on the effect of cross-viscous forces in certain non-Newtonian liquids in two and three-dimensional flows. He also proposed the extremal point collocation method for the computer solution of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). He defined the spline in compression and showed that the spline consistency relations are the fundamental equations of the discrete mechanics. He has also derived the compact implicit difference schemes for the PDEs with nonlinear first derivative terms. Dr Jain has published more than 125 research papers and written a book Numerical Solution of Differential Equations (John Wiley, Halsted Press, New York 1979). He has guided 35 students for their PhD degree.
Other Contributions: Professor Jain's other contributions include: the development of personnel policy; the management of central facilities; and academic policy making at the Universities and the Institute of Technology as a Member of Expert Committees. Jain has been the Secretary-Treasurer of the Indian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ISTAM) and was elected as its President (1976). He was on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.
Awards and Honours: Jain received the Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to promote application of mathematics by the Indian Society of Information Theory and Application (2002).
