Summary

VLS Bhimasankaram obtained his MSc (1951) and DSc in Applied Geophysics (1957) from Andhra University. In 1956, he was appointed as Lecturer in Geophysics in the Andhra University. He was in Germany during 1957-58 for specialization in Geomagnetism. Between 1958 and 1961 he was an INSA Senior Fellow. In 1962, he was awarded the prestigious Nuffield Foundation Fellowship of the United Kingdom, and did research work in Paleo-magnetism and Rock-magnetism under PMS Blackett, at Imperial College, London. During this period he elucidated the magnetic self-reversals in pyrhhotites, which he could demonstrate in the laboratory. He worked as the Chairman and Managing Director of AP Mineral Development Corporation, Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) during 1987-89 and became Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Osmania University (1989-91). He retired from active service in November, 1991 and became Emeritus Scientist, CSIR (1991-94) and Emeritus Fellow, UGC (1994-96).

Academic and Research Achievements: On his return from London in 1963, Bhimasankaram was appointed as Reader in Geophysics in the Dept of Geology, Osmania University, and Professor in 1966. The Geophysics Division, under his charge, expanded rapidly with UNESCO assistance and in 1967 was re-organized as Centre of Exploration Geophysics. His research interest was in the areas of Geophysics, particularly, geomagnetism. He has published more than 100 scientific papers, written five books, and edited five books in different branches of Geophysics. Under his guidance 20 research scholars have taken PhD degree from the Osmania University.

Other Contributions: Professor Bhimasankaram founded the Association Exploration Geophysicists, which acted as a catalyst for Geophysical Education, Research and Investigations in India and abroad. He was its Secretary from 1975 to 1991. He was on Editorial Board of the Journal of the Geophysical Society of India. He edited the Journal of the Association of Exploration Geophysics for over a decade. He was also a Fellow and an Editor of the AP Academy of Sciences. He was the Volume Editor of Essays in Geophysics in Telugu and also an Editor of Vignana Vauhini. He was and one of the Editors and a contributor of Vignana Deepika - Volume-II in Telugu of the Andhra Pradesh Sahithya Academy.

Awards and Honours: Professor Bhimasankaram is a recipient of the Van-Weelden Award of the European Association of Exploration Geophysicists, the Decennial Award of the Indian Geophysical Union and is a Fellow of AP Academy of Sciences. He was honoured with the prestigious Millennium plaque by the Indian Science Congress (2007) and Puraskara Sanmanam of the Sri NR Sahitya Peetham at Hyderabad (2008).
