Anand Swarup Arya had a distinguished academic record at the University of Roorkee (BE in Civil Engineering & ME in Structural Engineering 1950-54) and the University of Illinois, USA (PhD, 1959-61). He served the University of Roorkee in Civil and Earthquake Engineering faculties for 36 years from where he retired as Professor & Head of Earthquake Engineering and Pro-Vice Chancellor in 1989. Presently Dr Arya is a Professor Emeritus of Earthquake Engineering in IIT, Roorkee and Chairman, Bureau of Indian Standards Committee, CED 39 on Earthquake Engineering Codes, Government of India. He is a National Seismic Advisor, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, on GOI-UNDP Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Programme.
Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Arya taught the Civil and Structural Engineering and also Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures. He introduced several new courses including blast resistant structures, disseminating earthquake engineering through specialist courses at Roorkee University and many other Institutions and Design organizations in India. Besides, he conducted training in Yugoslavia, Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Afghanistan and Nepal. Dr Arya made significant contribution to methods of dynamic analysis and design of structures ranging from small to multistoreyed buildings, arched and shell structures, bridges, dams and atomic power plants. The unique feature of his approach has been to develop the most appropriate solution to the complex structural problems for feasible application. He guided more than 60 Master's and 11 PhD theses in Structural and Earthquake Engineering.
Other Contributions: Dr Arya played a significant role in establishing Indian Society of Earthquake Technology. He developed the interdisciplinary Department of Earthquake Engineering at the University of Roorkee for teaching, research and consultancy, covering the most complicated structures. He worked as Director of International Association of Earthquake Engineering and as Consultant to UNESCO, UNCHS, UNCRD and the World Bank and produced an International Manual for Earthquake protection of the non-engineered buildings.
Awards and Honours: Dr Arya has received the Khosla National Award (1980), ISET Jai Krishna Award (1982), FICCI Cash Award (1986), IE (I) National Design Award (1987) and United-Nations DHA-Sasakawa Disaster Prevention Award (1997). He was awarded Padma Shri (2002) and Disaster Mitigation Award (2006). He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (I) and Indian National Academy of Engineering.
