Man Mohan Chawla earned his BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees in Mathematics from the University of Delhi. He joined faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (1963) and obtained his PhD degree (1968) in Numerical Analysis. At IIT, Delhi he rose to be Professor (1978) and Head, Mathematics Department (1986-89). In 1992, he accepted professorship at Kuwait University, retiring from IIT, Delhi (1994). Chawla has been visiting faculty at the University of Illinois and New Mexico State University, USA; at the University of Manitoba, Canada; and Oxford University Computing Laboratory, UK.
Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Chawla's initial research work was in numerical integration and approximation, then shifted to finite-difference methods for ordinary and partial differential equations. Later, he worked on Parallel Numerical Linear Algebra algorithms. For the past decade and half he has been interested in Financial Mathematics, especially numerical valuation of options and other financial derivatives and 'Portfolio and Risk Management'. Currently, his research focus is on 'Interest Rates and their Derivatives'. Professor Chawla has over 180 research publications to his credit and has supervised nine Doctoral Theses and seven Master Theses.
Other Contributions: During his tenure as Head, Mathematics Department, IIT, Delhi, Professor Chawla helped establish MTech in Computer Applications (1986). Recently, he has helped to establish BSc in Financial Mathematics at Kuwait University (2006). Chawla has been the Associate Editor of Journal of Computer Mathematics (UK).
