Vinodini Reddy obtained MBBS (1958), DCH (1960) and MD (Pediatrics) (1965) from Osmania University, Hyderabad. She joined National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in 1961 as Research officer, then got WHO Fellowship for advanced training in 'gastroenterology and nutrition' at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA during 1966-67. After her return, she was appointed Chief of the Clinical Division at NIN. She worked at the Institute for nearly 30 years and served as its Director (1988-95). She was Visiting Professor, Johns Hopkins University, USA (1995- 2000).
Academic & Research Achievements: The main contributions of Vinodini Reddy has been in the areas: infant nutrition and growth, nutrition-immunity interactions, protein energy malnutrition and vitamin A deficiency. Some of her researches have led to the development of National Nutrition programs. She developed recipes based on locally available nutritious foods, some of which are used in supplementary feeding programs for children. Clinical and community studies on the use of large dose vitamin A contributed to the development of National Vitamin A Supplementation Program for combating vitamin A deficiency in children. Her analytical studies focused on micronutrient-rich foods. Horticultural-cum-educational interventions were successfully implemented in rural areas, increasing the production and consumption of such foods to combat micronutrient deficiencies. She published nearly 200 scientific articles in various national and international journals.
Other Contributions: During her tenure as the Director, Vinodini Reddy guided the NIN scientists in their research programs in various disciplines such as food science, nutrition, clinical medicine, public health and social sciences and contributed significantly to the development of the Institute. As Member of several national committees of DGHS, ICMR and ICAR, she assisted the Government of India in formulation of food and nutrition policies. She served as Member of various International Committees of FAO, WHO, UNICEF, MI (Micronutrient Initiative) and IVACG (International Vitamin A Consultative Group).
Awards and Honours: Dr Vinodini Reddy was conferred numerous awards, including: PN Raju Award (1978), Dr Kamala Menon Medical Research Award (1981), JB Chatterjee Gold Medal (1988), Dr YR Reddy Award (1990), Basanthi Devi Amirchand Prize (1991), Dr Siva Reddy Gold Medal (1990) and Dr BC Roy Award (1992). She also received the coveted Freisland Prize (1973), an international award for her outstanding research on Lactose Intolerance. She was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (1984), Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences (1989), National Academy of Medical Sciences (1990), and International Union of Nutritional Sciences (1990) and Vice President of the International Union of Nutrition Sciences (1993-97 and 1997-2001).
