THE INSA PLATINUM JUBILEE CHAIR FOR PROMOTION AND SERVICE TO SCIENCE

On the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee Year (2009-10), the Academy instituted a Chair to recognise sustained life time contribution of a scientist/technologist to the promotion and service to science in India.

 

Name of the Chair:

The Chair is called INSA Platinum Jubilee Chair for Promotion and Service to Science. The awardee is called ‘INSA Platinum Jubilee Chair for Promotion and Service to Science’.

 

Objectives:

The main objective of instituting the Chair is to recognise a scientist/technologist who has made sustained life time contributions to the promotion and service to Indian science. The awardee of the Chair may continue to work in an area of his/her choice in any R&D Centre/University/Institution in India.

 

Eligibility:

The award shall be made to Indian scientists/technologists working in India.

 

Number:

Initially there will be one position (Chair) which may be subsequently increased.

 

Duration:

The Chair is tenable for five years.

 

Value:

The Chair shall carry a fixed pay of Rs. 80,000/plus admissible allowances per month, (equivalent to INSA Research Professor). Pensionary benefits etc. shall be deducted as per Govt. of India rules. A contingency of Rs. 1,00,000/- per annum is associated with the Chair for meeting expenses on secretarial help, stationery, communication, travel etc.

There shall also be a provision for appointment of a Research Associate (as per DST/CSIR guidelines) to assist the awardee.

The institution to which the awardee is attached shall, as far as possible, provide research facilities, secretarial assistance etc. (where necessary, telephone and secretarial assistance may be provided on job basis out of contingent funds). The funds will be drawn by the host institution where the awardee works.

 

Announcement of the Chair:

The President will present the name of the scientist/technologist, chosen by a committee constituted for the purpose, to the Council at its October meeting for consideration. The name of the awardee approved by the Council will be announced in the Annual General Meeting. The award offer will remain valid for one year from the date on which the offer is made by the Academy.

 

Obligations:

 The intellectual property rights arising out of the work of the chair will be governed by the norms of the host institution.
Support for the INSA Platinum Jubilee Chair should be acknowledged in all publications.
  The awardee is expected to present to the Academy an yearly report of the work done at the end of each calendar year along with the statement of expenditure for release of grant for next year.
  The awardee is expected to present a comprehensive report soon after the expiry of the tenure.
  The awardee will also be invited to deliver a talk during one of the INSA meetings after completion of the tenure.
  At the completion of the tenure the awardee shall hand over all permanent equipment purchased through the contingency funds to the institution where the work was undertaken or any other institution as decided by INSA.
  These regulations may be revised or amended by the Council of INSA at any time.
