Experts Interaction Event on Climate Change Issues in India


In the year 2014 a series of outreach events on climate change issues were organised by INSA with the support of US-NAS. Professor V.Rajamani, FNA was coordinator of this programme. As the funds were not fully utilized, on the request of INSA, US-NAS agreed to extend this programme and to use the unspent funds for related outreach activities. The first activity was organised on ‘The Chennai rains of November December 2015’ at Department of Geology, Anna University, on 4-5 March 2016.the next activity was a Group Discussion meeting on ‘The Srinagar Rain and Flood of September 2014’, at the Jammu University, Jammu, on May 13-14, 2016. Professor V Rajamani, was co-ordinator for these two events.

National Science Day Celebration


INSA, in association with TWAS National Chapter celebrated the National Science Day on 29 February 2016 and organized five lectures at University of Delhi (South Campus), JNU and IIT-D. Lectures were delivered by Professor Anil Kumar Gupta, IIM-Ahmedabad and founder of Honey Bee Network at University of Delhi (South Campus) and JNU on ‘Is Autopoietic Model of Creativity and Innovation Self-limiting?’, Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala, FNA at IIT-D and JNU on ‘How does India get 50% of its Electrical Power from Solar by 2030?’ and Professor MS Raghunathan, FNA, FRS at University of Delhi, South Campus on ‘Making Mathematics in India’.

Brain-storming session on ‘Spreading Quality Teaching’


Brain-storming session on ‘Spreading Quality Teaching’ was held in INSA premises on 29 March 2016.Professor S.C Lakhotia, Vice-President INSA was convener of this programme. The main objective of this session was to create network among teachers for achieving quality science education in this country. The three science Academies already have programme for improving teaching quality. The idea of this brain storming session is to expand the horizon so that all the teachers and students of all Indian colleges/universities should get benefit of quality science teaching methods.During the meeting the members identified contact persons among participants who will collate protocols for different lab exercises that are doable at colleges with basic facilities. The convener Professor Lakhotia suggested to plan workshops for training and to take advantage of the existing inter-academy programmes for funding for such workshops.

Workshop on rare diseases


A workshop to develop scientific programme for research on rare diseases was held at INSA premises during 22-23 April, 2016. . The meeting was organized by Dr. V.M. Katoch FNA, former DG Indian Council of Medical Research and Secretary, Health Research, Dr. P.P. Majumder FNA, Director National Biomedical Genomics Institute, Kalyani and Dr. Alok Bhattacharya FNA, Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The Workshop was inaugurated by Prof. PN Tandon and was attended by over 100 clinicians, researchers, Government officials, representatives of the pharma industry and NGOs, patients and students working in this area and from across the country. A meeting report was published in Proceedings of Indian National Science Academy, September 2016 issue (Vol82).

Brain-storming session on ‘the impact of science on Indian society’


A brain-storming session on ‘the impact of science on Indian society’ was held on 26 July 2016 at INSA premises. Prof. LS Shashidhara, Vice-President, INSA coordinated the programme. All the participants discussed about the ways to project impact of S&T in numbers, which can be used by public/Govt. officials/policy makers while drafting various policy documents.
