James Philip Mills was an ICS (1913) with a keen interest in anthropology. He was the Advisor, Government of Assam for tribal areas and states. He also served as the reader, School of Oriental and African studies, University of London.

Academic and Research Achievements: Mills worked on the anthropological aspects of Kohima and Naga Hills of Assam (now in Nagaland). His work resulted in three monographs: Lhota Nagas (1922), Ao Nagas (1926) and Rangma Nagas (1937), which brought him worldwide acclaim.

Awards and Honours: Mills was conferred CIE (1942) and received the River Memorial Medal (Royal Anthropological Institute) (1942).
