Krityunjai Prasad Sinha obtained the MSc (1950) from Allahabad University, and the PhD (Solid State) (1956) from Poona University under the supervision of GI Finch. He earned another PhD (Theoretical Physics) (1965) from Bristol University under the supervision of MHL Prycc. He worked as Group Leader, Solid State & Molecular Physics Unit, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (1959-68); Member, Technical Staff, Bell Laboratories, New Jersey, USA (1968-70); Senior Professor, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore (1970-89); INSA Senior Scientist (1990-93), CSIR Distinguished Scientist (1993-96), JNCASR Senior Scientist (1996-98), INSA Honorary Scientist (2006- ), IISc. He was Director, Institute of Fundamental Research on Complex System, Shillong (1991-94); and Visiting Scientist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2000-03). Academic and Research Achievements: Sinha made the pioneering researches on the quantum theory of reaction mechanism in the solid state, the discovery and the first statistical theory of cooperative Jahn-Teller effect induced structural phase transition and the origin of ferroelectricity. He has studied mechanisms of exchange interaction in magnetic solids; spin-phonon, phonon-magnon and electron-magnon interactions and relaxation processes in para-, ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic solids, electron-phonon interaction and transport properties of semiconductors, origin of giant magnetic moments and resistance minimum phenomenon in dilute alloys, novel electronic pairing mechanisms and super strong gravity at extreme matter densities and singularity free cosmology. He authored over 300 papers and six books and mentored 35 PhD students. Other Contributions: Sinha established schools of research activity in condensed matter theoretical studies and complex systems at many institutions in India. He also served as Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Awards and Honours: Professor Sinha was conferred the UGC National Lectureship (1972-73), SS Bhatnagar Prize in Physical Sciences (1974), Distinguished Alumnus award of the HH Wills Physics Laboratory, University of Bristol (1977), and Platinum Jubilee Distinguished Alumni Award by IISc (1984). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad. |
