After earning BSc (Hons) and MSc from Delhi University, Buti studied at the Department of Physics, University of Chicago. There she worked with S Chandrasekhar and obtained her PhD in Plasma Physics in 1962. On her return from USA, she worked at Delhi University as a Post Doc, but decided to go back to USA to work at Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA). She worked at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (1968-70). Vikram Sarabhai, the then Director, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), invited her to join PRL, where she worked from 1970 to 1993 as Associate Professor, Professor, Senior Professor and Dean of Faculty.
Academic and Research Achievements: At PRL, Buti initiated the experimental Plasma Physics programme. This group grew and eventually moved out of PRL and formed a new institute, now known as Institute of Plasma Research under Department of Atomic Energy. She was the Director of Plasma Physics at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy during 1985-2003. Besides publishing a large number of research papers, she has edited four books. She trained a number of students and has worked at different NASA centers, namely, Goddard Space Flight Centre, MD; Ames Research Centre, CA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA. After her retirement she spent four years at JPL, Pasadena.
Other Contributions: She founded Plasma Science Society of India and served as its President (1992-93). She was an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, USA (1977-83) and served as Vice President (1988-91) and President, Commission 49, International Astronomical Union (1991-94). She was a member of Governing Council of Nuclear Science Centre, New Delhi (1996-98) and of Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (1997-99). During 1997-99, she was also a member of Physics Panel, University Grants Commission, New Delhi. She has instituted a number of awards through Physical Research Laboratory, Indian Physics Association and awards for young scientists through Plasma Science Society of India; a scholarship and a Gold Medal for the best woman Acientist at IIT, Delhi. Buti served as INSA Council Member (1991-93).
Awards and Honours: Professor Buti received the Vikram Sarabhai Award for Planetary Sciences (1977), Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Lectureship Award (1993), INSA Vainu Bappu Medal for Astronomy and Astrophysics (1994), Professional Achievement Citation Award of University of Chicago, USA (1996) and US Medal for Fundamental Contributions in the Physics of Nonlinear Waves and Chaos (2010). She is a Fellow of TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and the American Physical Society.
