Mahendra Pal Singh obtained the PhD (Mathematics) from the University of Maryland He then worked at Cornell University for about one and a half years and at NASA for a year before returning to India to join the IIT Delhi as a founding faculty member. At his initiative the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences was set-up. It has grown into a leading research center, well known internationally for its work in climate research, cyclone prediction and air quality modeling. He was also Visiting Professor at Cambridge University (1973). After retirement from IIT Delhi, he has been Founder Director, Ansal Institute of Technology (AIT), Gurgaon (2000-2010) and contributing towards its reputation internationally. Currently he is the Executive Director of Ansal Institute of Technology and Management, Lucknow (2011-).

Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Singh has made pioneering contributions in atmospheric sciences. The Pure and Applied Geophysics brought out a special edition Weather and Climate: The MP Singh Volumes I and II, in his honor with leading experts from all over the world as contributors. He has published about 100 research papers, authored (jointly with Professor Sethu Raman) the book: Dynamics of Atmospheric Flow. He supervised 27 students for the award of PhD.

Other Contributions: Singh served as Member of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (1987-92). He served on the Editorial boards of: Atmospheric Environment (1988-94), Non-linear World (1992-96) and Advances in Fluid Mechanics Series (1994-98). He was one of the Guest editors of the special issues (1991 and 1995) of the journal Atmospheric Environment and an editor of the book 'Air Quality', a PAGEOPH Topical Volume (Birkhauser) published about a decade ago.

Awards and Honours: Professor Singh won the Dr YS Parmar Gold Medal and Oration Award (1984) and was also UGC National Lecturer (1976 -77). He was also awarded Knight of the Order of Academic Palms, France (2008) by the Prime Minister of the French Republic and conferred with ‘Distinguished Service Award’ by IIT, Delhi(2010-11). He was honored and given  "Leadership and Global Educator" award by Hope Medical Institute, USA alongwith The Medical University of Lublin and The Medical University of Silesia, Europe in recognition of several decades of contribution in the field of biomedical engineering, atmospheric sciences(2011).

He was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad. He was President of the Indian Mathematical Society, and Physical Sciences Section of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad; and Sectional President (Mathematics), Indian Science Congress, each for one year.
