Vijay Balakrishna Shenoy obtained his B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras in 1992. He was awarded a Masters Degree by the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1994, and a Ph. D. degree from Brown University in 1998. He took up the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor at Brown University in 1998 and became Assistant Professor at IIT Kanpur in 1999. In 2002 he moved to the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore where he is currently a Professor in the Centre of Condensed Matter Theory, Department of Physics.

Academic and Research Achievements: Vijay Balakrishna Shenoy has made pioneering contributions to diverse areas of condensed matter physics including topological phases of fermions, cold atoms, graphene, correlated systems and nanoscience. His recent work on topological phases developed a novel route to tenfold classification such systems leading to the discovery of amorphous topological insulators  His work on cold-atomic fermions in synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields includes the seminal discovery of the rashbon, suggestion for the enhancement of transition temperatures of superfluids, a proposal for the cold-atom realization of magnetic monopoles. This has stimulated research worldwide. His other contributions in cold atoms include a theory of the upper branch of strongly interacting fermions, routes to address the entropy problem, ``baryon squishing\'\' in synthetic dimensions, and fractional local moment Kondo effect. His work on graphene brought out the novel physics of nanoribbons including a subtle sensory organ like response that determines their magnetism and the theoretical understanding of transport in graphene ribbons. His work on strongly correlated cuprates threw light on material dependencies of these high Tc superconductors, and electronic inhomogeneities in other correlated oxides. He was instrumental in the theoretical discovery of a new instability that enables nanopatterning of soft films. His scaling theory of the properties of nanostructures has provided a seminal platform for research for over a decade.

Awards and Honors: Dr. Shenoy is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize  2013 in Physical Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences Bangalore, and a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Madras. He was awarded the INSA Medal for Young Scientist (2002), INAE Young Engineer Award  (2005) and NASI Scopus Young Scientist Award (2009).
