Summary

Shreepad Laxman Ajrekar qualified the Indian Agricultural Service (1920); and Indian Educational Service (1923). His specialization was in botany (classical). He was Economic Botanist, Government of Bombay (1917-19); Indian Agricultural Service (1922-23); Professor of Botany, Institute of Science, Mumbai (1923-28) and Science Institute, Gujarat College, Ahmedabad (1928-38).

Academic and Research Achievements: Ajrekar was a distinguished mycologist whose work on cotton with mucor, aspergillus and potato was considered significant. His work on mycology found place in Srishtidhyan and Vanaspati Jeevan.

Other Contributions: Ajrekar was an Editor of Journal of the Indian Botanical Society. He had edited several scientific works in Marathi, for example, the Marathi Encyclopedia Dnyankosh, which included several of his contributions on plant life.

Awards and Honours: Ajrekar was a Founder Member of Indian Botanical Society (President, 1927) and Maharashtra Association for the Cultivation of Science. The Maharashtra Association for the Cultivation of Science named its herbarium 'Ajrekar Mycological Herbarium' in his honour.
