Summary

Amiya Chandra Banerji did his MSc (1913) from the University of Calcutta, and MSc from the University of Cambridge, UK. His specialization was in mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics. He was Professor of Mathematics, Vice-Chancellor and Professor Emeritus, University of Allahabad; and Adviser, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Banerji's first work was on the Cepheid theory of the origin of the solar system. He also worked on the physical theory of oscillating universe and the method of promotion of the arms of a spiral nebula. Along with his students, he made important contributions to astrophysics, hydrodynamics, wave mechanics, nuclear physics, theory of relativity, and galactic dynamics.

Other Contributions: Banerji was an INSA Council Member (1948).

Awards and Honours: Banerji was the President, Mathematics Section of Indian Science Congress (1940). He was a Fellow of Royal Astronomical Society; Foundation Fellow of National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad; Member of International Astronomical Union; Calendar Reforms Committee; Banaras Mathematical Society; Indian Astronomical Society; Indian Planetary Society; and Calcutta Mathematical Society. He was Vice-President of INSA (1949-50).
