Sudhangshu Kumar Banerji obtained his DSc degree (1918) from the University of Calcutta. His area of specialization was Meterology and Astropheric Physics. He was Ghosh Professor of Applied Mathematics, University of Calcutta; Director, Colaba and Alibag Observatories; and Director-General, India Meteorological Department, New Delhi.

Academic and Research Achievements: Banerji made detailed studies of microseisms associated with disturbed weather in the India seas. He recorded and analyzed a series of observations on the electric field of some 30-thunder clouds as they passed over the Colaba Observatory. Also he made a detailed investigation of the earth currents leading from the electric tramway system of Bombay into the ground at Colaba and Alibag Observatories. The diurnal variation of natural earth currents and their fluctuations during magnetic storms was an important part of his study. Amongst the other investigations he made at Colaba, mention may be made of discontinuous fluid motion, evaporation, artificial vibrations of ground, and the effects of mountain ranges on monsoon circulation over India. He made many helpful suggestions on the development of the C-type (clock-type) radiosonde instruments and their large-scale production for use at a large number of stations.

Awards and Honours: Banerji was an Officer (of the Order) of the British Empire (1943) (OBE). He was Secretary, Calcutta Mathematical Society (1918); Physical Sciences Secretary, Asiatic Society (1918-22); Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; and Member of Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, Indian Statistical Institute, American Meteorological Society, and American Mathematical Society.
