Summary

Sir Harry G Champion obtained his DSc degree (1950) from the University of Oxford, UK. His area of specialization was forestry. He was Assistant Conservator of Forests, United Provinces (UP) (1915-25); Silviculturist, Imperial Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun (1926-35); Conservator of Forests, UP (1936-40); Professor of Forestry and Director, Imperial Forestry Institute, Oxford (1940-58); and Emeritus Professor, University of Oxford (1959-67).

Academic and Research Achievements: Champion was well known for his work as a colleague of Sir Charles G Trevor at the Forest Research Institute. He made surveys of major forest types of India and was versatile in almost all branches of forestry science: Silviculture, Statistics, Working Plans, Ecology and Entomology. He authored Silvicultural Research Manual for India (2 Vols); Statistical Code; Manual of Indian Siliviculture (later revised); Preliminary Survey of Forest Types of India and Burma (later revised with SK Seth as Forest Types of India); Regeneration and Management of Sal and Manual of Forestry for Pakistan.

Awards and Honours: Champion was CIE (1941) and was Knighted (1956). He was a recipient of Fernow Medal (1969). He was President (1958-59), Society of Foresters of Great Britain and Chairman (1959-61) of Commonwealth Forestry Association.
