Summary

Sir Kedarnath Das obtained his MD degree in the University of Madras with a specialization in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was the Registrar (1892-99), Eden Hospital, Calcutta Medical College, and Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (1988-19), Campbell Medical School. He later served as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1919-36) at Carmichael Medical College, Kolkata where he subsequently became Principal (1922-36). Das was also the First President of the Indian Provincial Medical Services Association and the Assistant Secretary of the Indian Medical Congress Association.

Academic and Research Achievements: Das had to his credit notable contributions in medicine and surgery, particularly obstetrics and gynaecology. His work on puerperal eclampsia and his obstetric forceps (named Das forceps) are well known in medical science. Das published over fifty articles on various obstetrics problems and gynaecology with special reference to trophical problems, and three-text book including Obstetrics Forceps, its History and Evolution which was later published in many foreign languages.

Other Contributions: Das is credited with initiating specialization in midwifery in India. He organized Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of Campbell Medical School (Madras) and Carmichael Medical College (Kolkata).

Awards and Honours: Kedarnath Das was knighted in the year 1936. He was honoured with the title of Dhatribidyarnaba by Dharma Mahamandal, Varanasi, and awarded the Coates Medal by University of Calcutta in 1919. The Maternity Hospital attached to Carmichael Medical College has been named Sir Kedarnath Maternity Hospital, in recognition of his services to the college. He was a Fellow at the American Gynaecological Society, and the American Association of Obstetricians, Gynaecologists and Abdominal Surgery. He was one of the Foundation Fellows of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists as well as a Fellow at Royal Institute of Public Health, Royal Society of Medicine, London.
