Phanindra Nath Ghosh obtained his PhD degree in Applied Physics from University of Calcutta (1920). He was the Ghosh Professor of Applied Physics, University of Calcutta.
Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh carried out investigations in molecular spectroscopy, dielectrics and design of electrical measuring instruments. During those days, his spectroscopic laboratory was one of the best in East.
Other Contributions: Ghosh developed the Department of Applied Physics of University of Calcutta into a leading centre of research. He was a Member of the Managing Committee, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Chairman, Industrial Survey Committee of Bengal and Vice-President of Bengal Industrial Research Board.
Awards and Honours: Dr Ghosh was the President, Physics Section of Indian Science Congress (1941). He was a Fellow of the Asiatic Society (Kolkata) and Senate, University of Calcutta and also the President of the Indian Physical Society (1943-45) and Indian Science News Association.
