Summary

Mian Muhammad Afzal Husain obtained his PhD (1919) from the University of Cambridge, UK and DSc (hc) from Panjab University, Lahore. His area of specialization was entomology. He was the Professor of Entomology (1919-33) and Principal (1933-38), Agricultural College, Lyallpur (Faislabad); Vice-Chancellor, Punjab University, Lahore (1938-44, 1954-65); First Plant Protection Adviser to Government of India (1946) and Chairman of Pakistan Public Service Commission (1948-52), Pakistan Sugar Commission (1957-58) and Pakistan Agricultural Council (1961-65).

Academic and Research Achievements:Husain made significant contributions to the biology, ecology and food preferences of the desert locust; bionomics and control of cotton whitefly; ecological studies on pink bollworm; bionomics of cotton jassids; and biology of mango hoppers, citrus and walnut pest. He organized plant protection departments both in India and Pakistan.

Other Contributions:Husain was an acknowledged expert in organization and management of scientific research. His contribution to agricultural education and research both in India and later in Pakistan were noteworthy. He was a Member of INSA Council (1935-40; 1944-46).

Awards and Honours:Husain was the Foundation Fellow of Entomological Society of India; President, Agricultural Section (1933) and Entomological Section (1938) and General President (1946) of Indian Science Congress Association. The Government of Pakistan conferred Hilal-i-Quaid-i-Azam to him.
