Prafulla Chandra Mitter obtained his PhD (1912) from University of Berlin, Germany specializing in organic chemistry. He served as the Rashbehary Ghose Professor of Chemistry (1914-36) and Palit Professor of Chemistry (1937), University of Calcutta, Kolkata.
Academic and Research Achievements: Mitter’s researches related to: (i) action of phenylhydrazine on opianic acid, nitro-opianic acid and phthalonic acid and of phenylhydrazine on phthalaldehydic acid and phthalonic acid; (ii) condensation of amidiness with ethoxymethylene derivatives of beta-ketonic esters and of beta-diketones; (iii) a general method for the synthesis of pyrimidines; and (iv) synthesis of iminazoles. Mitter also made a contribution of fundamental importance on properties and structure of natural anthraquinones, their classification and synthesis.
Other Contributions: Mitter was the first editor, Jnan o Vijnan. He served as the Secretary and Treasurer, Indian Science Congress Association (1930), Member, Indian Chemical Society; Treasurer, Indian Science News Association; President, Science Section, Banga Sahitya Sammilanee.
