Summary

Edmondson Spencer obtained PhD (1932) from University of Liverpool, UK. He remained Chief Chemist, Bird Company, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Spencer did field work in geology, mineralogy and metallurgy, and was responsible for the discovery and exploitation of economic mineral deposits and for the development of a process for refining impure limestone for use in cement manufacture. He also did experiments on the use of bamboo as a raw material for paper production. He invented the `cascade process of digestion’ for which he received world patents, and was also responsible for successful production of quality paper from bamboo pulp at Titaghur Paper Mills.

Other Contributions: Dr Spencer was Member of the Institution of Chemists (India) and also remained its President during 1933-34.

Awards and Honours: Dr Spencer was elected Fellow of the Geological Society of London.
