Summary

Sikhi Bhushan Dutt earned the degree of DSc (1926) from the University of London with specialization in organic chemistry. He became Reader in Chemistry and Professor of Organic Chemistry from 1926 to 1944; Professor of Chemistry and Head of the Chemistry Department, University of Allahabad 1944 to 1949.

Academic and Research Achievements: Dutt did some valuable work principally in four areas, namely, colour on the basis of molecular strain of organic compounds, synthetic dyestuffs, chemistry of plant products, with special reference to Indian medicinal plants, essential oils and vegetable oils, and lastly, chemistry in the detection of crime in India.

Other Contributions: He served as an Additional Member in the INSA Council (1938).

Awards and Honours: Sikhi Bhushan’s distinctions include the University Jubilee Gold Medal (1921), Mouat Medal of University of Calcutta (1923), Uttar Pradesh Education Ministers Gold Medal, UP Academy of Sciences for outstanding research work and Smiths Prize of University of London. He was a Member, Indian Chemical Society, Chemical Society of London, Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland, Society of Biological Chemists (India), and Uttar Pradesh Academy of Sciences.
