Edward Rowland Gee earned his DSc degree (1947) from the University of Cambridge. His area of specialization was geology. He was the Assistant Director (later Deputy Director) of Geological Survey of India, Kolkata and also the Director, Geological Survey of Pakistan.

Academic and Research Achievements: The geological investigations carried out by Gee included the survey on the means of augmenting the water supply of Quetta, the survey of the salt mines around Khewra, Chanuwala, Makrach and Kalbagth in North West Frontier Province, feasibility study of the Lumahiwal sandstone for use as glass-sand, study iof the stability of the Sanawar Ridge with special reference to safety of the Lawrence Royal Military School at Kasauli (Simla hills), and study of ground water problem, in the Santhal Parganas in Bihar. Gee described the fossiliferous Cambrian beds in the middle –western parts of the salt range. He consolidated the works on the Eocene age of the saline series of the Punjab salt range and of Kohat area. Gee postulated two separate main periods of earth’s movement in Late Eocene to Oligocene times to explain the tectonics of the area. Also he described the Raniganj coalfield, which included a detailed correlation of the coal measures and estimated of the reserves of coal of different qualities.

Awards and Honours:Gee was a recipient of Tangsha of Pakistan (1960) and Officer of the Order of British Empire (OBE) (1960).
