Summary

Praphulla Chandra Guha earned his DSc (1923) from the University of Calcutta. His specialization was in organic chemistry. He was a Lecturer and later Reader in Chemistry, University of Dacca, and then Professor and Chairman, Department of Organic Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore during 1928-52.

Academic and Research Achievements: Guha did pioneering work on the synthesis of mono- and sesqui-terpenoids and bridged bicyclic compounds. His investigations covered stereochemistry, geometrical isomerism, steric hindrance, steric effects in aromatic substitution, and heterocyclic compounds. He initiated work on synthetic drugs, established preparative synthesis for well-known antimalarials, sulpha drugs, local anaesthetics and many other useful products. He would be particularly remembered for his work on Indian essential oils and natural products.

Awards and Honours: Guha was the President, Chemistry Section of the Indian Science Congress (1936). He was a Fellow of Indian Chemical Society and was also its Council Member and Vice-President.
