Summary

Nolini Kanto Bose obtained his PhD degree (1923) from the University of Gottingen, Germany. His area of specialization was hydrodynamics. He was Reader, Aligarh Muslim University (1925-27); Mathematical Officer, Irrigation Research Institute, Lahore (1927-43); Director, River Research Institute, Bengal (1943-56); Adviser, Government of Bengal, Ministry of Irrigation; and Professor, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Bose studied the problem of waterlogging in Punjab, specially with respect to their location, extent and connection with the irrigation system of Punjab, depth and distribution of underground water table and their connection with the distribution of rock formations. He was involved in the Ganga Barrage Project and was responsible for setting up a model station at Belghoria for carrying out model studies at different project sites of the Damodar Valley Corporation. Also he made reclamation studied in the Kolkata City. He co-authored (with AN Khosla) the book, Design of Weirs and Permeable Foundation, rated as a standard reference work on underground foundations.

Other Contributions: Bose set up a hydraulic laboratory and Irrigation Research Institute in Punjab.

Awards and Honours: Dr Bose was conferred upon the Ripon Lectureship of Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (1947); and Acharya JC Bose Memorial Lecture Award of Bose Institute (1953). He was a Member of Institution of Engineers (India).
