Summary

Rajendra Nath Ghosh earned his DSc degree (1927) from the University of Allahabad. His area of specialization was acoustics. He was Reader and Professor of Physics, University of Allahabad.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh did pioneering work in the theory of clarinet and other musical instruments. The theory and practice of musical instruments acoustics invited the prolonged dedication of Dr Ghosh, starting in 1920 under the inspired guidance of Professor CV Raman at Kolkata. This branched into four main fields viz. (a) vibration of strings, wires, as in violin, (b) reeds as in harmonium, clarinet etc., (c) stretched membranes of Indian drums, and (d) hammers as in pianoforte. His contribution to measurement of acoustic impedances of indigenous absorbing materials was well acknowledged. The interferometers developed in his laboratory for measurement of stationary wave patterns of ultrasonic waves in liquids were original in design and extremely sensitive. His investigations on ‘acoustic impedance of fog, colloids and gels ie composite mediums, were application-oriented. He also made some contributions to the theory of ultrasonics.

Other Contributions: Ghosh wrote a textbook on Sound.

Awards and Honours: Ghosh was the President of Physics Section of the Indian Science Congress (1951). He was a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad.
