Prakrity Kumar Ghosh earned his PhD (1926) and DSc (1934) from the University of London. His area of specialization was geology. Joining the Geological Survey of India as Assistant Superintendent in 1929, he rose to the position of Deputy Director at GSI. He was also a part-time Professor of Geology, University of Calcutta (1938-40); Head, Department of Geology, Presidency College, Kolkata (1945) and Officer-in-Charge, Raw Materials Division, Atomic Energy Commission (1957).

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh’s work was devoted mostly to geological mapping, petrology, engineering geology and groundwater problems. His important contributions relate to charnockite problem, mineral springs of India, location of Cuddapah basin in Madhya Pradesh, and of natural gas in Kathiawar. His greatest contribution lies in pointing out the therapeutic value of spring waters.

Other Contributions: Ghosh published the Directory of Indian Mines and Metals.

Awards and Honours: Dr Ghosh was the President of Geology Section of Indian Science Congress (1949). He was a Fellow of Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Society of India, Foundation Fellow of Geological Society of India, Member of Asiatic Society (Kolkata) and Member as well as Regional Vice-President for Asia, Society of Economic Geologists, USA.
