Summary

Govind Sadashiv Ghurye obtained his PhD degree (1922) from the University of Cambridge, UK. His area of specialization was anthropology. He was a Professor of Sociology, University of Bombay, Mumbai.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghurye made extensive ethnical studies in India. His other research interests were: fecundity and civilization, funerary monuments of India, and sex practices of Bombay middle class society.

Other Contributions: Ghurye was instrumental in developing the first post-graduate sociological department in the country. He authored 33 books and became internationally known for his books Caste and Race in India, The Scheduled Tribes and Social Tensions in India. He also edited the Journal Sociological Bulletin. Ghurye was the President, Anthropology Section of Indian Science Congress (1935). He was the Founder President of Indian Sociological Society and also President of Bombay Anthropological Society.
