Ramesh Chandra Majumdar obtained DPhil specializing in theoretical physics. He served as Professor of Physics (later National Emeritus Professor), Department of Physics and Astrophysics, University of Delhi.
Academic and Research Achievements: Majumdar is known of these original investigations on astrophysics, statistical mechanics, conduction of metals and ionosphere. He demonstrated Raman effect in X-rays, the theoretical possibility of which Sommerfeld had suggested. Developed relativistic Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics, which Milne, Eddington, Chandrasekhar and others used for studying the properties of white dwarf stars. With DS Kothari, he developed a new theory of planets. Derived a basic formula for dissociation of molecules in the upper atmosphere. Majumdar also derived the generalized Appleton-Hartree dispersion formula for the propagation of radio-waves, in the ionosphere, incorporating the effects of the distribution of electron velocities and velocity dependence of collision frequency. The formula has found applications in the study of radio-wave propagation in the ionosphere.
Awards and Honours: Majumdar was the Member, Council (1950-51), Secretary (1952-56, 1961-64), Treasurer (1965-68) and Editor of Publications (1957-60), INSA.
