Summary

Suhrit Chandra Mitra obtained the DPhil degree from University of Leipzig, Germany specializing in experimental psychology. He served as the Professor of Psychology, University of Calcutta; Professor, Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Mitra’s work related to the theory of emotion, psychology and unemployment, concept of instinct and experiments on Fechner’s paradox. While working at Leipzig, Mitra imbibed the spirit of German ‘Kultur’ psychology and made extensive theoretical studies. On his return to India, his interest shifted to Freudian psychology and psychoanalysis was profound but he did not practice as psychoanalyst for treatment of mental patients.

Awards and Honours: Mitra was the Member, Deutsche Philisophische Gesselschaft; Secretary, Indian Psychological Association and International Psychoanalytical Society. He served as President, Psychology Section, Indian Philosophical Congress (1934) and Indian Science Congress (1935).
