Srinivasa Rao Savur did his PhD from University of London, UK. He was Meteorologist, Indian Meteorological Service, Pune; and also Head, Geophysics Department, JVD College of Science and Technology, Andhra University, Waltair.
Academic and Research Achievements: A distinguished mathematician, Savur did much valuable work in statistics. His work on stress-optical coefficients and stress-optical effect find mention in textbooks. He also worked on methods of determining simple correlation coefficients and periodicities, and theoretical development of a very general test (the performance test) as well as a general test of significance applicable to all frequency distributions, which had important applications in meteorology.
Awards and Honours: Dr Savur was elected Fellow of the Physical Society, London, Royal Meteorological Society, London, and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
