Jogendra Chandra Bardhan obtained his DSc degree (1924) from the University of Calcutta and again DSc (1928) from the University of London, UK. His area of specialization was synthetic organic chemistry. He was Khaira Professor of Chemistry (1946-60), and Head, Department of Chemistry (1960-62), University of Calcutta.
Academic and Research Achievements: Bardhan's work on the synthesis of polycyclic compounds, terpenoids, steroids, phenanthracene derivatives, etc. made him an outstanding researcher in synthetic chemistry. His contribution to the synthesis of phenanthracenes is considered a classic piece of research.
Other Contritbutions: Bardhan was a Member of Scientific and Technical Terminology Commission, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Awards and Honours: Bardhan was a recipient of Mouat Medal from University of Calcutta (1924).
