Nibaran Chandra Chatterjee obtained his DSc degree (1938) from the University of Bombay. His area of specialization was entomology. He was Forest Entomologist, Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun.

Academic and Research Achievements: Chatterjee made extensive investigations on the spike disease of sandal (Santalum album), chemotropism, influence of kusum (Sleichera oleosa) oil on insects (Serinetha augur, Coreidae), biology of Tachandia lacca Kerr, biological control in forestry and systematic entomology. His monographic work (along with Imms) on morphology and biology of lac insect is still considered a standard work on the subject. Chatterjee (along with CFC Beeson) worked on control of sal (Shorea robusta) heartwood borer (Haplocerambyx spinicornis) and developed an effective method to control this important timber tree of India. His studies on biology, distribution and alternate hosts of 54 species of insects feeding on Lantana (a problematic weed) have been highly acknowledged.

Other contributions: Chatterjee was Managing Editor of Indian Journal of Entomolology (1942-44) and member of its Editorial Board for many years. He was Founder Member of Entomological Society of India (President 1943).

Awards and Honours: Chatterjee received the title of Rai Bahadur. He was President, Zoology and Entomology Section of Indian Science Congress (1951).
