Summary

Manindra Nath De earned his MBBS in 1918 from the University of Calcutta and MRCP in 1926 from London, specializing in bacteriology and medical science. He worked as Professor of Pathology and Bacteriology, Government of Bengal from 1919 to 1937, Professor of Clinical Medicine, Professor and Director of Medicine and Presidency Physician, Government of Bengal.

Academic and Research Achievements: De made outstanding contributions to the histopathological study of epidemic dropsy. He discovered several new cutaneously manifested diseases and his findings indicated a toxic origin for the diseases. His contributions to the enunciation of Bengal splenomegaly with cirrhosis of liver are well known. His clinical studies covered wide fields like kala-azar, malarial tuberculosis, leprosy, leptospirosis, dermal leishmaniasis, diphtheria, dysentery, uraemia, pneumococcal peritonitis, Pfferriffer bacillus meningitis, encephalitis, septicaemia, silent heart disease, coronary thrombosis, cancrum oris, neuromyelitis optica, salmonella fevers and pregnancy anaemia.

Other Contributions: Manindra Nath edited the Calcutta Medical Journal and authored the book Bacteriology in Relation to Clinical Medicine.

Awards and Honours: Professor De was a recipient of the JC Coates Gold Medal given by the University of Calcutta. He was a Member of the British Medical Association and also its President in the Calcutta Branch. He was a Member of the Association of Physicians of India, Calcutta Medical Club, and Indian Medical Association, as well as a Fellow, Royal Society of Medicine (London) and the International Association of Medical Museums (Montreal), and Medical Faculty of West Bengal.
