Summary

Bhupendra Nath Ghosh obtained his DSc degree (1931) from the University of London, UK. His specialization was in physical chemistry and electrochemistry. He was a Sir Taraknath Palit Professor of Chemistry, University of Calcutta.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh’s significant achievements include the determination of electrokinetic potential of colloidal particles by applying surface conductance correction, derivation of equations which account quantitatively for the variation of osmotic pressure counter-ion activity, specific conductivity and electroviscosity of purified colloidal electrolytes with dilution; modification of Debye-Huckel theory, and derivation of equations which show that the equivalent conductivity of the strong electrolytes varies with dilution according to the cube-root of their concentration as proposed by JC Ghosh. He also found that their activity coefficient, viscosity and heat of dilution also follow the cube-root relationship. Ghosh also carried out immunochemical and clinical biochemical studies on snake venom. He studied the effect of crude cobra venom and the purified respiratory toxin on the biosynthesis of acetyl choline by animal brain cells. The venom contains an inhibitor which significantly affects the synthesis of acetyl choline by brain cells of animals.

Other Contributions: Ghosh served as a Member of the Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Experimental Medicine and Toxicon and Vice-President (twice) of Indian Chemical Society. He also served as Honorary Advisor of the Bengal Immunity Research Institute, Kolkata.
