Edward Leslie Gilbert Clegg obtained his DSc (1938) from the University of Manchester, UK with specialization in geology. He was Assistant Superintendent of Officiating Director of Geological Survey of India.

Academic and Research Achievements: Clegg carried out fieldwork in Central Provinces (now parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh), Bihar and Orissa Circles. In 1922 he was deputed to carry out work in Burma where he spent four years in mapping parts of Minbu and Thayetmyo districts. In recognition of his geological work in Burma, the Manchester University awarded him DSc in 1938. In Burma he mapped the Mogok area, the Jade mines district, Lai Sai State, etc. in detail and took numerous traverses along the defiles of the Irrawaddy and Uya rivers. Gem-bearing limestones of Mogok, he concluded, are metamorphosed Cretaceous limestones. He visited the Burmese mineral deposits and acquired knowledge of the oilfields in Burma.

Awards and Honours: Clegg was a Member of Asiatic Society and a Life Member of Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India.
