Narendra Mohan Basu did his MSc in the year 1913 from the University of Calcutta. His areas of specialization were physiology and biochemistry. Basu held the position of Professor and Head, Physiology Department, Presidency College, Kolkata (1914-47).
Academic and Research Achievements: Basu developed an accurate method on perfusions of frog's heart. He extended his research to cobra venom, krait and Russell's viper venom. He studied strychnine and failing heart, cobra venom and its action on heart, action of some ayurvedic drugs like Brihat Kasturi Bhusan, Brahmachari's urea stibamine and the new drug neostibusan, and histanine. He also made extensive studies on vitamin C, its requirement in Bengali diet and relation to human fatigue, excretion, nature in green and ripe mangoes, role in some ayurvedic medicines, relation in blood coagulation and blood sugar curve, synergism with B1 deficiencies and in underfed conditions; action of Ca, K ions and adrenaline group of alkaloids in fatigue of muscles, relationship of Ca, K ions in relation to adrenalin and acetylcholine and action of musk on heat, etc. Basu also studied membrane phenomena and chose RBC as a tool and studied percentage haemolysis by Ponder's phenomenon and observed crenation by changing ionic balance.
Awards and Honours: Narendra M Basu was a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and Member of the Physiological Society of India. He was elected as the President of the Physiology Section, Indian Science Congress (1939).
