Hamid Khan obtained his PhD degree (1936) from the University of Cambridge, UK. His specialization was in zoology and fisheries. He was Game Warden (1939-44); Warden of Fisheries (1945-47); Warden of Game and Fisheries (1947-48); Superintendent of Fisheries, Punjab; Head, Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Lahore (1948-53); Professor of Zoology, FC College, Lahore (1953-71); Visiting Professor of Biology, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA (1962-63).

Academic and Research Achievements: Khan's research and development work spanned almost the entire gamut of fisheries, such as habits and habitats, reproduction, breeding and spawning habits, ovulation, parental care, methods of fishing, fist diseases and fist mortality, larvivorous fishes, transport of live fish, fish culture, fisheries legislation, conservation and development, stream pollution, exotic fishes, and catching and marketing of fist in Punjab. He was the first in South Asia to induce fish to spawn by the use of mammalian pituitary. He succeeded in inducing ovulation of Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton).

Awards and Honours: Khan was a Fellow of Royal Microscopical Society, London (1923-25), Cambridge Philosophical Society (1935-36), Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1944-54) and Panjab University, Lahore (1949-53). He was the Foundation Fellow of Pakistan Academy of Sciences (President, 1972-73) and also Foundation Fellow of Zoological Society of Pakistan (President, 1973-75).
