Summary

Ganapati Panja obtained MB (1919) from University of Calcutta, and DBact from London School of Dermatology. He became Professor of Bacertiology and Pathology, School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Panja was a clinician and therapist of legendary repute. His reputation attracted patients from all over India and other Asian countries. Some of his important research contributions were in the fields of seborrhoeic dermatitis, malassezia of the skin, their cultivation, morphology and species, diphtheritic ulcers of the skin, the garigha of Chittagong hill tracts, a modified medium for isolation of dysentery, enteric and isolation of vibrios from cholera stool.

Other Contributions: Dr Panja served as Editor of Indian Journal of Dermatology.

Awards and Honours: Dr Panja won the Coates Medal by University of Calcutta (1941). He was also President, Medical and Veterinary Section, Indian Science Congress.
