Summary

Bijoor Sanjiva Rao received DSc (1946) from University of London, UK. He was Professor of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry (1926), Principal (1946), Central College, Bangalore; Professor of Inorganic and Mineral Chemistry (1947), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (1947); and Professor of Chemistry, Gauhati University.

Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Sanjiva Rao’s research activities have been very varied. He had carried out extensive work on natural products especially of essential oils. He had also considerable work to his credit in the area of adsorption. His work on the oxides of sulphur monoxide and other sulphur compounds is quite unique and established him as a worker of repute and earned for him the DSc degree of London University. In later years Professor Rao was much interested in the area of soil chemistry and has made significant contributions in this area as well.

Other Contributions: Professor Rao was Member of the Indian delegation to Seventh General Assembly of UNESCO, INSA Council (1957), and Society of Biological Chemists (President, 1955).
