Summary

Sudhamoy Ghosh earned his DSc (1915) from the University of Edinburgh, UK. His field of specialization was natural products chemistry. He was a Research Chemist at the Indian Research Fund Association (now ICMR) and the Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry (later Professor Emeritus) at School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ghosh worked on the chemical investigation of medicinal plants for the ayurvedic inorganic preparations like Lauha Bhasma, Swarna Bhasma, and Samudra Phena. The Provincial Drug Control Laboratory (later the State Drug Control and Research Laboratory) of West Bengal started functioning under Ghosh at the School of Tropical Medicine. Other Contributions: S Ghosh co-authored Manual of Organic Chemistry for Medical Students, Organic and Toxicological Chemistry and The Poisonous Plants of India. He was also a member of West Bengal Public Service Commission (1946-50). Awards and Honours: Ghosh was a recipient of the Minto Medal from School of Tropical Medicine (1931) and MBE (1945). He was a Member of the Chemical Society (London), Royal Society of Edinburgh, Deutsche Pharmazeutische Gesellschaft, Royal Institute of Chemistry (UK), Indian Chemical Society, and Institution of Chemists (India).
