Summary

Calamur Mahadevan did his DSc (1931) from University of Madras specializing in geology and mineralogy. He served as the Assistant Superintendent and Superintending Geologist, Geological Survey of Hyderabad; Professor and Head, Department of Geology, Andhra University and UNESCO expert in Geology in Brazil.

Academic and Research Achievements: Mahadevan determined the physico-chemical characteristics of coal and lignite powder by X-rays and extended his research to other bituminous substances and natural resins. He studied the geology of Keonjhar and Bonai iron ore fields and chromite deposite of Jorhat; studied water problems in the western districts of Hyderabad state and mapped the Bhima basin part of the Pakhals of the Godavari valley and Raichur and Shalapara. Investigated several mineral deposits and did sampling of the hatti Gold Fields. As an UNESCO expert, he discovered large depsots of cassiterite in the upper reaches of the Amazon near the Bolivian border and in the Rio Negro valley above Manaus. He guided the mapping of several hundred square miles of the Eastern Ghats regions between Srikakulam and Nellore.

Other Contributions: Mahadevan organized a branch of Applied Geology at Andhra University; also introduced oceanography and marine geology in the university. He served on several committees of CSIR, DAE, and UGC and on Andhra Pradesh Mining Development Board. He was a Member, INSA Council during 1952-53 and 1957-59.

Awards and Honours: Mahadeven was a Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Geological Society of India, Palaeobotanical Society of India, and American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers.
