Des Raj Malhotra obtained SB (1923) from Harvard University, USA and DSc (1930) from University of Brussels, Belgium specializing in chemical and metallurgical engineering. He served as the Chief Metallurgist, Indian Railways; Industrial Advisor, Government of India; Member, Railway service Commission, Bombay; Chief engineer and Adviser, Sandur Manganese Company.

Academic and Research Achievements: Malhotra did extensive work on the development of alloys, for example silicon bronze, silvery bronze bearing alloys and stainless steel. He held patents on the manufacture of alloys, he had developed.

Awards and Honours: Malhotra received the Carnegie Research Award (Iron and Steel Institute, London) (1930) and Invention Promotion Board Award (1969). He was the Fellow, Institution of Engineers (India), Institute of Metallurgists (London), Institute of Chemical Engineers (London), and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and Member, INSA Council (1954-55).
