BS Bhimachar obtained his DSc degree (1946) from the University of Calcutta. His specialization was in applied zoology and fisheries. He was Fisheries Officer, Government of Mysore (1940-47); Senior Research Officer, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (1947); and Director, Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore (1954-66).

Academic and Research Achievements: Bhimachar was responsible for effective organization of inland fishery research and did extensive research on taxonomy, distribution, bionomics and fishing biology. He made significant contributions to the morphology of the skulls of Indian catfishes, correlation of feeding habits and the structure of brains of certain fishes and zoogeography of hill-stream fishes. He studied the effects of industrial effluents on fish life. The fish population studies, made by him, of Malabar Coast as influenced by the seasonal fluctuations round the year is the first of its kind about fishery wealth in terms of food fishes of the inshore areas. The technique of induced breeding of Indian major carps with recourse to hypophysation, developed under his guidance, has revolutionized the entire inland fishery development in India. He organized development-oriented fisheries research in the country.

Other Contributions: The well established Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute at Barrackpore and all its research stations spread in the length and breadth of India, with its various disciplines of not only freshwater capture and culture fisheries but also those of brackish water capture and culture, is a tribute by itself to Bhimachar. He was Chairman, Fish Seed Committee of Government of India.

Awards and Honours: Bhimachar was a recipient of Chandrakala Hora Memorial Medal of INSA (1965). He was a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and Zoological Society of India. He was President, Zoology Section of Indian Science Congress (1959).
