Ganes Chandra Mitter obtained his MSc (1920) from University of Calcutta specializing in industrial chemistry and metallurgy. He served as the Chief Assayer, His Majesty’s Mint, Mumbai; Honorary Professor of Industrial Chemistry, Royal Institute of Science, Mumbai. He was a Member, Advisory Board, Department of Works, Mines and Power, Government of India.
Academic and Research Achievements: Mitter worked on the recovery of bichromate and sulphuric acid liquor from waste chrome liquor. As a result of his investigation, full-scale plants were installed at Bombay Mint and New Mint, Lahore. He also worked on the refining of precious metals, especially silver from alloys.
Other Contributions: Mitter published among others a book Standard Weight and its Verification (Tracker & Co., Mumbai, 1945).
Awards and Honours: Mitter was a Member, Indian Chemical Society, Institute of Metals (London), Bombay Metallurgical Society, American Electrochemical Society and American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers.
