Summary

Subodh Kumar Chakrabarty obtained his DSc degree (1943) from the University of Calcutta. His specialization was in applied mathematics and atmospheric sciences. He was Professor of Mathematics, City College, Kolkata and Lecturer, University of Calcutta (1935-45); Director, Colaba and Alibag Observatories, India Meteorological Department (1945-48); Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, Bengal Engineering College (1949-63); Sir Rashbehari Ghose Professor and Head, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Calcutta (1963-74).

Academic and Research Achievements: In collaboration with Bhabha, Chakrabarty developed the theory of cascade showers in cosmic radiation. His other contributions relate to: (i) dynamo theory of Sq variations, (ii) relations between geomagnetic storms and emissions of solar corpuscles, (iii) theory of electromagnetic seismographs, and their standardization, and (iv) earthquake source mechanisms from an analysis of seismograms.

Awards and Honours: Chakrabarty was a recipient of Mouat Medal of University of Calcutta (1943) and Elliot Prize of Asiatic Society (1944). He was the President, Mathematics Section of Indian Science Congress (1954), and also the President of Calcutta Mathematical Society (1970-72).
