CSJ Racine received DSc in 1934 from University of Paris, France. While working in the Loyola College, Chennai, he was Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics.

Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Racine’s research covered mainly Riemannian spaces, theory of relativity, motion of a particle of varying mass, and relativistic problems of n bodies. Racine wrote the treatise Introduction to Potential Theory (1942), considered to be a classic, and published a textbook on Modern Algebra and another treatise on Mathematical Analysis (2 Vols).

Other Contributions: A French mathematician, Racine made a profound impact on the teaching of mathematics in India.

Awards and Honours: Dr Racine was recipient of ‘Prix d’Aumale’ by French Institute (1959); and also Legion d’Honneur’ by French Government (1962).
