Arunachala Sreenivasan received DSc (1936) from University of Madras. He was Professor, Department of Chemical Technology, University of Bombay (1943-59); Deputy Director, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore (1959-64); Head, Biochemistry and Food Technology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai (1964-71); Adviser, Department of Atomic Energy, Mumbai and Emeritus Scientist, BARC (1971-73); Director, Cancer Research Institute, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai (1974-75); and Consultant Food Scientist and Technologist (1976- ).
Academic and Research Achievements: Working in the areas: food science and technology, Sreenivasan contributed to the understanding of: (1) basic metabolic events and regulatory mechanisms influenced by nutritional, hormonal, and radiation effects; (2) tissue differentiation and de-differentiation processes; (3) development and evaluation of (i) protein-rich food formulations for combating protein-calorie malnutrition, and (ii) other food processing technologies; and (4) food preservation by gamma irradiation.
Other Contributions: Sreenivasan was Leader of the Indian Delegation to IUB General Assembly, Stockholm (1973); Chairman, IAEA Panel on Improving Food Quality by Irradiation, Vienna (1973); Member, FAO/WHO Protein Advisory Group, and several boards of ICAR, ICMR, CSIR, etc. He served on the Editorial boards of some CSIR, ICMR, ICAR and other journals. He was Member of the Society of Biological Chemists, India (sometime President), Nutrition Society of India (sometime President), Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (sometime President), International Congress of Food Science & Technology (sometime President) and INSA Council (1975-77).
Awards and Honours: Professor Sreenivasan was conferred Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize by ICAR (1966-67); BC Guha Memorial Lecture Award by INSA (1972); Outstanding Teacher (Golden Jubilee Year) Award by University of Bombay (1985); Distinguished Alumnus (Platinum Jubilee Year) Award by IISc (1985); Honoured Member of Society of Biological Chemists, India (1988); and Padma Bhushan (1974). Lectureship awards won by him include: Acharya JC Bose Memorial Lecture (1973); Golden Jubilee Lecture by Indian Institute of Science (1979); JG Kane Memorial Lecture by University of Bombay (1980); and Association of Food Scientists & Technologists Endowment Lecture (1981). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
